Bro, maybe those blogs are easy to navigate and they provide quality content.
I think their users can read the content easily and also the search engines. And about poor design, it sometimes effects loading speed and also the blog don’t look much attractive. PR4, ah! that comes with time and if they’ve links from High PR blogs. Yes high pr and good seo can help you to get 10K visits as well. I also see that Google favors the old blogs, that may be a reason as well.
Design needs to be clean that’s it. It need not be great. Moreover many people these days visit on mobile, they don’t see all the heavy graphics

Name of the blog matters a lot. If the name is too damn typical or contains some unusual characters (-,_), it becomes very hard for the readers to remember it. Thanks for sharing !
