Join the Discussion: What Makes Tumblr Such a Successful Blogging Site?

tumblr Tumblr, what’s that? Of course, you’ve heard about it before, right?

If you’re a power internet user, then you must have.

Actually, Tumblr is a microblogging platform + a social networking website.

Before talking more about it let’s see some stats. :)

Tumblr founded on February 2007, now has over 96 million blogs hosted on their servers. According to comScore, it scored 13.4 million unique visitors in the United States alone in July 2011—up 218% from July 2010.

Wow! So Tumblr is a very popular site with millions of active users all over the world.

Important:

But what really makes Tumblr so successful?

Let’s have a discussion on that and find out why it’s so popular.

Attraction for the Teens.

First reason of Tumblr’s high success rate is due to the age group that the site seems to attract. Most of the active users on the site are teens. I feel this is the main reason that the site has experienced so much success.

In a recent survey of more than 1,000 Internet users aged 13-25, Tumblr proved to be outpacing Facebook, with the broadest stretch among the teens 13-18. Sixty-one percent of this younger demographic indicated using Tumblr, compared to 55% of Facebook.

Very User Friendly.

This blogging platform makes it quick and easy to blog any type of post such as text, photo, video quotes and so on. Not only this but it is very simple and easy to format a blog on Tumblr with many sites providing free code for themes.

Great Community.

Another area of the site that has made it successful is the fact that there is a great community of people with variegated interests. So, by joining Tumblr you can get to meet new people who are like-minded and can interact with them. You can gain fans and followers. These are people who like your blog and follow you. The style of timeline is very similar to other social networking sites that constantly updates.

Free to create blogs.

Every user get a username.tumblr.com domain like that of wordpress.com and blogger users. So they get a domain name for free. And so even those who don’t want to pay for a custom domain can use Tumblr. But if someone wishes then he can buy and use a custom domain instead.

It’s a Social Network.

It is true that Tumblr is a very successful blogging site and the reasons we have explored above highlight it. But, it is also a great social network. As said above, we can get to meet many people like we meet in social sites like Facebook and Twitter.

Simple with No Ads.

Tumblr has a simple and clean interface which is not stuffed with ads of marketing products. Thus the youth loves it and takes it as the best place to share their knowledge with other people.

In conclusion, we can say that the age group and the no. of users on Tumblr really reflect the fact that it is a very popular blogging platform…

Over to you. Let’s have some discussion.

Do you have a blog on Tumblr? If yes, do you like interacting with people over there? What do you think, why is it so popular?

  3. Awesome posting on Tumblr. Thanks for sharing.

    • Glad you like it! :)

      • Hey Avi. I see that you really love to engage with your readers. How do you manage your time? I see that many bloggers never give a damn to even answer a question of their readers. Man, how? By the way, this Tumblr article was a nice read. I want more like this. :D

        • No, I’ll not answer your question. Hey! Just kidding…

Des, I’m here because of my readers, how can I just leave them without helping? At least I’ve time to help them in their tough time. Coz when I was going through hard time some people helped me too. What if they didn’t helped me? How would I feel?

And it’s my blog. I love engagement. I try to engage as much as I can. So no worries, if you ever get any question, feel free to ping me or comment on post. I’ll reply, sooner or later. Cheers. :)

  4. I have a Tumblr account for a retail site I do but I see mostly just images there. Not content like our blogs. Is that how most are? Thanks Avit.
I love it on my mobile- easy to do!

    • Hey! Lisa. No, there’s blog on many topics. There are photography blogs too as you said. You can just go around and follow some blogs to get the latest news from their blogs right in your dashboard. I’ve just joined Tumblr, have not written anything there but would love to connect with you there.

I’ve followed a few blogs and the content they share is really awesome. I love the photos they share, quotes they post and also the interesting articles on some cool topics. :)

  5. Awesome article by Susan. And I appreciate Avi’s selection in the guest post, you never accept the posts which are not interesting. Everything here on SHB is very interesting and helpful. I’ve not joined Tumblr but I’ll surely join now as it’s free and a place to meet new people who have the same interests. :)

  6. Nice article. I’m feeling great to see the stats of Tumblr. In just a few years it has got over 96 million blogs. Just wow! :)

  7. You know 1 thing Avi? People search the Tumblr term more than blog now. It’s really very popular. I knew that they are enjoying success but thanks to skyhitblog for revealing the secrets. :)

  8. Hi! Avi. I just love your blog. Can you tell me how to do better on Tumblr? I mean, can I start a blog there and earn money? I want to make it big. :D

    • First thing you should do is make a blog is very informative and helpful. Next is to engage with more people to get exposure. Then you can go with Social Media promotion. Finally you can write posts having your links that can give you commissions. But never try to sell directly, try to teach and let people know why they should use the product. Hope that helps you Faizal.

  9. I’ve been using Tumblr just for submissions and sometimes to find good/interesting content related on some niches.
However, I find only 1 of 10 or even less articles attracting me, and a lot of sales pages and similar stuff on the IM area.

  10. I knew about tumblr quite before. But didn’t want to get stuck in another social network. Already fb is getting complicated day by day :p Nowadays myspace and frendster are only memories!!

  11. one of the key features that tumblr blogging platform has is it follows the shoes of social networking unlike other blogging platforms where one can only follow the updates through feed at tumblr people can follow blogs and if they wish they repost things at a single click to share them on their tumblogs..

  12. I do have a Tumblr blog. Tumblr was where I created my very first blog; which however failed as back then I had issues with the commitment of blogging and even tweeting. I currently use my Tumblr as a photo blog; feel free to stop by! I’d more than love to have more feedback on my skills.
